Of course, if you read the book, you know that Tom’s intentions were less than noble; he was conning the other boys into painting his fence. But the observation on the difference between work and play holds up anyway.
Everything on this page started as work. Learning a new tool, keeping skills current, doing the sensible thing. But somewhere in the building phase, it turned into play: the kind you are not obliged to do and yet can’t quite stop doing.
